Happy Halloween week!

Untitled

Although Linda is a Halloween Grinch, we talk about a good number of Halloween events happening this week in episode 32. If you haven’t been to the Jack O’Lantern Spectacular (mentioned in episode 31) we recommend it. There’s also the Frazier Museum’s “An Evening with Poe,” Theatre 502’s “The Stranger and Ludlow Quinn,” and the Back Door’s Halloween Contest ($1000 grand prize! That would get you so many Back Door drinks).

On Friday, November 1st, Billy Goat Strut Revue and Small Time Napolean provide another opportunity to put on a costume with their “Saints, Sinners, and Swing” event at New Vintage. You could also check out the First Friday Trolley Hop — be sure to stop by Haymarket Whiskey Bar if you’re interested in meeting Michter’s Master Distiller.

We’re also looking forward to:

-Hello Neighbor: Day of Dignity at the Muhammad Ali Center on November 10th

-Louisville Visual Art Association’s first Open Studio Weekend on November 9th and 10th

Finally, Melissa’s recommendation for this week is the Chromebook. Linda has finally watched most of Scandal.

If you’d like to share a recommendation with us, please tweet us at @Lounotky or visit us on Facebook. And, if you like flash mobs and our theme song, here’s the Derby Festival flash mob Melissa mentioned.

Hillcrest. We still need to go.

So there is a neighborhood not too far from where I live, where the residents really like Halloween. They REALLY LIKE Halloween.

El Camino is open & serving tacos (and other food) and tequila (and other drinks).

We went last night, and assuming we can get them to turn down the music a bit while we record, I think the podcast has found new headquarters.

Cyclouvia

We recorded episode 31 live on Bardstown Road at CycLouvia. In between talking about how excited we are for tiki drinks and thousands of pumpkins, we said hi to all our friends who stopped by (we only kept a few of them in the episode).

In addition to future CycLouvias, this episode, we’re really looking forward to the opening of El Camino (the tiki drinks), the Louisville Jack O’Lantern Spectacular (the oodles of pumpkins), and Project Improv’s “We Ain’t Afraid of No Ghosts.” Other events we’re excited about include:

- the Louisville Photo Biennial, through the month of October

- the Moth at Headliners on October 29th

Melissa lets us know she’s discovered kale and welcomes your kale recipes. Linda is getting into the Marketplace Money podcast and welcomes you to not make fun of her for it. After seeing Frank X Walker speak, she’s also looking forward to reading some of his work. Finally, if you missed it, Jaison Gardiner’s interview with “The Book of Matt” author Stephen Jimenez is on this week’s episode of Strange Fruit.

Thanks to everyone who said hello to us in the street, especially Shea Van Hoy, Jessica Denson, Charlotte Glaab and JJ DiUbaldi.

Last Minute Thursday Night Events

As a bi-weekly podcast, we have a hard time talking about ALL the things, especially when we record three weeks in advance (have you heard our 30th episode? Just in case, it’s here). Here are two events we missed that you might want to check out tonight.

In celebration of National Coming Out Day (October 11th), Carmichael’s Bookstore and the Fairness Campaign will host author Stephen Jimenez. Jimenez will discuss “The Book of Matt,” in which, after more than a decade of investigation, he proposes the murder of Matthew Shepherd  was drug-related.

Our podcast friend, Jaison Gardiner of the Strange Fruit podcast, will interview Jimenez — so this is guaranteed to be an interesting event. If you plan to attend, Carmichael’s requests you RSVP via Facebook.

Sadly, as teleportation has yet to be invented, and I still haven’t been cloned, I can’t make it to the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft’s Musical Performance Series this evening. Hopefully your clone can make it to the Kentucky Premiere of Jesse Stuart Songs, new music composed by Daniel Gilliam (of WUOL) and performed by Nathan Wilson and Andrew Fleischmann. Learn more about these fine gentlemen (and Jesse Stuart) here.

Both of these events are free, and both start at 7. Decisions, decisions…

This 30th episode of “Louisville, Not Kentucky” WAS made in America, we promise. Due to more travels, we recorded much earlier than usual.

In this episode, Melissa gives us her impressions from her trip to Houston, Linda’s one-time hometown. We also congratulate podcast-guest Will Russell on the opening of his Rolling Roadside Attraction. Need other ideas for Kentucky-themed gifts? Check out this new Kickstarter project — a fleur de lis for your keys?

We look forward to Halloween season in Louisville (and maybe a first-time visit to Hillcrest for Linda). Through October, the midnight movies at Baxter  are Halloween-y. Other events we’re looking forward to include:

- the Tap ‘n’ Run on October 12th

- the Louisville Cocktail Competition on October 13th

-and in the not-so-near future, John Prine will be at the Brown Theatre on December 13th and 14th

In our excitement over past and upcoming travels, we totally forgot to talk about recommendations. So if you’ve got a recommendation for us (book, movie, podcast, event, app, cat litter), please let us know via Twitter or Facebook.

If jug band music is “America’s Happiest Music” then between the Jug Band Jubilee and Idea Festival, this may be one of the happiest times of year in Louisville (at least for us!). On episode 29, Heather Leoncini of the Jug Band Jubilee joins us to talk about the history of jug band music and the festival. Heather let us know she’s looking forward to Shovels and Rope at Headliners Sunday, September 22nd.

We’re also looking forward to all the events affiliated with Idea Festival:

-Start-Up Weekend on September 20th

-Louisville Music Awards on September 23rd

-NuLu Fest and the Mini Maker Faire on September 28th

There’s also Parking Week (Sept. 16-20) and CycLouvia (October 13th), mentioned on the last podcast. Finally, Le Petomane has a new show starting September 26th at the Bardstown.

For our recommendations this episode:

Melissa likes the Downtown Animal Hospital for her new kitten’s vet needs;

Linda recommends (if you still haven’t seen it) the music video “The Fox" by Norwegian parody band Ylvis;

and Heather recommends the online-glasses-ordering company Warby Parker.

As always, thanks for listening, and please let us know what you’re looking forward to on Twitter or Facebook!

Parking Week! One of the things we’re excited about on episode 29 gabebullard: It’s the @wfplnews Park(ing) Day park! It’ll be in front of Metro Hall all week.
